This time next week set-up will be underway for the first of two Weave Only a Trace exhibitions this year.
I’m really excited to see all of the new work from this wonderful group of basketmakers.

Weave Only A Trace: An exhibition of basketry, wood and natural fibres. Held in Shrewsbury at St Mary’s Church from Monday 18 – Saturday 30 August 2025, and in Ironbridge at the Footprint Gallery again from 18–30 November 2025.

🐞 The willow pest control are working overtime and they’re doing a great job keeping the aphids away this year. I’ve never seen so many ladybirds in one place, along with all the hoverflies and little birds that love the willow bed too.
🌿It’s all growing so well, despite the extremely dry weather we’ve had this year and the wildlife is thriving.

“How long does it take?” is one of the most frequently asked questions when people learn that I weave willow coffins.

The quickest that I’ve woven a coffin is 2 days! But that was two *very* long days and when I was done, my hands were sore.

I’m probably not the quickest willow coffin weaver out there, but I make every single one with love, care, and respect. I pay close attention to every detail. (I won’t lie, I’m a bit of a perfectionist!)

My plan was to finish weaving this coffin but Suzie had other plans, giving birth to this monster of a calf!

As a basketmaker, I have found the most frequently asked question has to be “Where do you get your willow from?”
So here is my answer!
🌿
I’d say at the moment it’s an almost 50/50 split between homegrown and purchased willow, but each year my willow bed is producing more rods per stool so I imagine that’ll change. Although I do love the ‘traditional’ look of the buff willow, as well as it soaking quickly, so it’ll really depend on customer demand!

It was great to see so much interest in my work! People were genuinely curious and wanted to know more, so I’ll be soon be sharing an FAQ series to answer some of the most common questions.
