On Saturday 10th May I held a willow weaving workshop at Humber Woodland of Remembrance where people could drop-in and weave a willow heart, wreath or bird feeder. I am so pleased to report that it was a wonderful day where creativity, nature, and conversation came together.
Visitors arrived throughout the morning, curious about the craft and the Humber Woodland. My willow coffin was on display, alongside leaflets from Dying Matters, and it was heartening to hear so many positive comments about my work.

It was a great opportunity to meet new people, as well as having some meaningful conversations about the importance of planning for the end of life. It reminded me just how much we, as a nation, need to get better at having these discussions. Talking about death doesn’t have to be morbid and it doesn’t change when it is going to happen. It can be deeply human, compassionate, and even comforting.
Each person that attended the weaving workshop left with a wonderful willow creation. They were proud of what they had created from of a pile of sticks and were excited to learn more. It was truly lovely to share my love of the craft and use my teaching skills again.

The location was perfect too. The Humber Woodland looked absolutely beautiful with trees in blossom, wildflowers lining the paths, and birdsong that filled the air. The woodland shelter created a perfect space to weave and there were plenty of refreshments to go around!
Weaving willow in such a place felt very fitting. The day brought together my passion for sustainable craft and compassionate conversations, and I hope to hold more workshops there in the future.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came, talked, weaved, and shared.
